Liberal Democracy: Between Epistemic Autonomy and Dependence

Understanding the relationship between experts and laypeople is crucial for under-standing today’s world of post-truth contemporary crisis liberal democracy. The emergence has been linked to various phenomena such as a flawed social mass media ecosystem, poor citizen education, manipulation tactics powerful interest groups. paper argues that problem is, however, more profound. underlying issue laypeople’s inevitable epistemic dependence on experts. latter part parcel “risk society” in which people question scientific consensus thus are able manipulate facts. It weapon hands illiberal democrats, though democrats can make no use it. downplay citizens’ deficits asymmetries be-tween them. third fourth generations deliberative perfect example. concepts interactional expertise explain why understanding impossible. said undermine liberalism’s unrealistic assumptions concerning citi-zens’ decision-making competence.
